Adult Art Classes in Suffolk

Structured 12-week drawing and painting courses for adults at friendly venues across Suffolk

My Suffolk art classes are taught as structured 12-week drawing and painting courses, with weekly demonstrations, practical exercises and individual guidance.

Classes are friendly and supportive, with space for beginners, returning artists and more experienced students to work at an appropriate level. Most daytime classes run for three hours each week, while the Martlesham evening class follows the same approach in a two-hour format.

NOW BOOKING 12-WEEK COURSE – AUTUMN 2026

Drawing and Painting the Portrait

This term, we will explore how to draw and paint convincing, expressive portraits through a clear sequence of practical exercises.

Beginning with proportion, structure and the main forms of the head, we will gradually move into tonal studies, colour mixing and portrait painting. You will work from photographs, demonstrations and live-model references, building the skills and confidence needed to develop a finished portrait.

During the course, you will explore:
  • Proportion and placement of the features
  • Construction and planes of the head
  • Light, shadow and tonal structure
  • Charcoal and monochrome studies
  • Mixing convincing flesh tones
  • Working from live-model reference
What’s included:

Your booking includes all 12 face-to-face classes, step-by-step demonstrations, individual guidance, course resources and access to the Online Studio Course Companion throughout the term.

“Attending Ed’s oil painting course has been nothing short of transformative for me as an artist.

Through the expert guidance, structured lessons, and hands-on practice, I’ve not only mastered new techniques but also discovered a confidence in my artistic voice that I didn’t know I had.”

– Olivia Bowyer – Martlesham Class
