Meet Ed
Artist, teacher, and lifelong learner
I’m Ed Cooper, a professional artist and art teacher based in Suffolk. Since 2009, I have helped adults of all abilities develop their drawing and painting through clear demonstrations, practical exercises, and individual guidance.
I believe artistic skill grows through good teaching and regular practice. My aim is to create friendly, structured classes where students can build confidence, understand the fundamentals, and make steady progress.
My Teaching Approach
The most important thing is that you enjoy your time in class. But I have also found that the more confident and capable you become, the more rewarding drawing and painting can be.
That is why I try to make sure you understand what you are practising, why it matters, and how it will help you improve. The aim is not pressure or perfection, but steady progress through clear guidance, purposeful exercises, and plenty of encouragement.
Clear Instruction
Step-by-step demonstrations make drawing and painting easier to understand.
Deliberate Practice
Focused exercises help you build skills through repetition.
Individual Guidance
Personal feedback helps you know what to work on next.
Student Work
Everyone begins at a different level, but with clear guidance and regular practice, students often achieve far more than they expected.
Here is a selection of work created in my classes by beginners, returning artists, and more experienced students.

Testimonials
What students say about learning with me
“There’s a place for everyone at Ed’s art classes. Whether you’re a novice or have previous art experience his classes are informal & he will advise you as much or little as you feel you need. Every term is different too! It’s such a warm & friendly group.”
Jo Broom
Ipswich Class
“I found Ed to be a very patient and encouraging teacher. He always spoke about the good in a painting while also pointing out any mistakes.
A mixture of students, in age and ability meant that no one was worried about their work not being good enough.”
Margaret Lines
Felixstowe Class
“I’ve attended Ed’s art classes for a year now and am amazed at how much I’ve learnt and my progression. He has structured topics each term and tries hard to help us understand and improve. I would recommend them to anyone with an interest in painting.”

FAQ
Do I need any previous experience?
No. The classes are suitable for complete beginners, returning artists, and more experienced students. Projects are explained clearly, and you can work at a level that suits you.
What materials will I need?
Some terms require a few extras, I try to keep it practical and affordable, and you do not need to buy everything at once. The basic materials list is here:
Materials List For Students
What happens during a typical class?
Classes usually include a demonstration or explanation, a focused exercise or project, and time for individual guidance while you work.
Will everyone be working on the same project?
The course follows a shared theme and structure, but you will still have room to work at your own pace and develop your own approach. I really like it when students get inspired and want to do their own thing.
What happens if I miss a class?
Where possible, course materials and supporting resources will help you catch up. Face-to-face students also receive access to the Course Companion during the term. If you can’t attend one week you can swap to another venue, just let me know.
How do I book?
Choose your preferred class location, complete your booking online, and you will receive confirmation and further information before the course begins.
Can I join online instead?
Yes. The Ed Cooper Online Studio offers Course Companion and Guided Studio options for students who want to learn from home or receive additional support.
