Work Directly From Life

Deliberate Practice - with Still Life

I am currently really inspired by the principal of deliberate practice—the idea that focused, intentional repetition is what truly builds mastery. In still life painting, this means slowing down, isolating specific skills, and working with clear goals in mind: improving the accuracy of a drawing, refining edge control, exploring colour relationships, or strengthening compositional design. By repeatedly engaging with simple objects under controlled conditions, we create a powerful learning loop where feedback is immediate and progress becomes measurable. Still life becomes more than a subject—it becomes a structured way to train the eye, sharpen technique, and accelerate growth as a painter.
