What fascinates me about the ‘Victorian’ (c. 1850-1930s) painters is that JSS along with likes of Zorn, Sorolla, Boldini, de Laszlo, Cecelia Beaux, Repin, Fechin – who all lived thousands of miles apart in relatively ‘closed’ societies – all drew and painted comparably AND with a virtuosity that one doesn’t see at all these days. Where have those drawing skills gone? How did they attain comparable standards with none of modern-day communications (eg. air travel, Internet, etc)?
